In compliance with a recent Federal High Court judgment in Abuja, Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has transferred Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), to the Nigerian Custodial Centre in Sokoto. The move comes in the wake of his conviction and sentencing for terrorism.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered the ruling, ordering that Kanu be moved to any correctional facility within Nigeria other than Kuje Prison in Abuja.

The judge had found Kanu guilty on a seven-count terrorism charge, concluding that he used extremist means in advocating for the secession of Nigeria’s South-Eastern and South-South regions, as well as parts of Benue and Kogi states.

Following the sentencing, sources within the DSS confirmed that Kanu was relocated to the Sokoto custody facility. His former lawyer and consultant, Aloy Ejimakor, publicly confirmed the transfer on social media, noting how remote the new location is from Kanu’s legal team, family, and supporters.

The transfer aligns with the court’s order, reflecting the Nigerian judiciary’s firm stance on the case. Kanu, now serving a life sentence, is expected to face the challenges of continued legal representation and visitation difficulties, given the distance from his support network.
