The town of Eruku, located along the boundary of Ekiti Local Government Area, has been thrown into mourning after suspected bandits launched yet another deadly attack on Tuesday evening, leaving two people dead and several others feared abducted.
The assailants reportedly targeted the Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Isegun parish, and surrounding areas on the outskirts of the community. Residents said the attackers arrived “suddenly and heavily armed,” firing shots that forced people to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
“They came around nightfall and started shooting. Two people were killed instantly, and we don’t even know how many were taken,” an eyewitness recounted.
Another resident expressed deep frustration, noting that Eruku has faced continuous assaults over the past three weeks, despite repeatedly alerting authorities. “We have begged the local and state governments for help, but nothing concrete has come. We are living in fear every day,” he lamented.
Community members revealed that local police, vigilante groups, and the Eruku Progressive Union have been making efforts to repel the attackers, but the renewed violence has heightened anxiety about worsening insecurity in the region.
An elder in the town appealed for urgent government intervention, saying, “We need federal help. These attacks are becoming too much for us to bear.”
The latest incident adds to growing concerns about the spread of armed banditry in border communities, where residents continue to live in fear amid repeated attacks.
