Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has sparked controversy after accusing a member of the DR Congo team of using voodoo during the tense penalty shootout that ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

According to Chelle, the incident occurred moments before the decisive kicks, and he could not hide his anger after witnessing what he described as a clear act of “juju” on the sidelines. The coach claimed that the alleged ritual influenced the atmosphere of the shootout, adding to Nigeria’s frustration after a hard-fought 1-1 draw stretched through extra time.

DR Congo eventually triumphed 4-3 on penalties, securing their spot in the intercontinental play-offs and eliminating the Super Eagles from the race to the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
