Nigerian comedian and actor Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as AY, has expressed strong disappointment following the Super Eagles’ failure to progress in the 2026 World Cup play-offs. Nigeria lost to DR Congo on penalties in Sunday’s decisive match, ending their hopes of qualifying for the tournament in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
Reacting to the defeat, AY took to social media to criticize the team’s performance, stating that even the officiating appeared to favour Nigeria at certain moments. “It’s a big shame to the Super Eagles. Even the referee was trying to help you,” he wrote.
He went further to comment on the team’s dependence on star striker Victor Osimhen, suggesting that the squad struggled without him. “What you people have proven to us is that without Victor Osimhen, no Super Eagles,” AY added.
The comedian’s remarks echo the frustration of many fans who expected a stronger display from the national team. Nigeria’s elimination has sparked conversations about squad depth, coaching decisions, and the future of the team as they miss yet another major international opportunity.
