Renowned author and feminist icon Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has shared a candid message with young Nigerian feminists, urging them not to hide harmful behaviour behind the label of feminism. Speaking on the growing misunderstanding of the movement, Adichie emphasized that feminism is rooted in equality, empathy, and justice — not cruelty.
She revealed that some young women misrepresent feminism by embracing attitudes that are unnecessarily harsh or unkind.
“To young Nigerian feminists, please do not use feminism to justify your wickedness. Some of these young women, when I talk to them, they sound really mean, and I say, ‘You know what, this isn’t feminism: you are just really nasty,’” Adichie said.
Her comments have reignited conversations about the true meaning of feminism and the importance of distinguishing activism from personal behavior. Many have applauded her clarity, noting that her message helps preserve the integrity of the movement, while encouraging self-awareness among its younger supporters.
