Senator Adams Oshiomhole has voiced strong opposition to the imposition of taxes on goods manufactured in Nigeria, arguing that such a policy would discourage local production and undermine efforts to boost the nation’s economy.

Speaking on the issue of taxation and industrial growth, the former Edo State governor stated that imposing levies on locally produced goods is counterproductive, as it penalizes individuals and businesses striving to contribute to Nigeria’s self-reliance.

“I do not think that we should impose a tax on anything manufactured in Nigeria, because imposing a tax on it punishes people for producing at home,” Oshiomhole said.

He emphasized that government policies should instead focus on creating incentives for domestic manufacturers through tax reliefs, infrastructure development, and access to affordable credit. According to him, encouraging local production will not only create jobs but also reduce the country’s dependence on imported goods.

The senator’s stance aligns with broader calls from economic experts urging authorities to adopt a more production-friendly tax framework that supports the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) — the backbone of Nigeria’s economy.
