A fierce battle between rival terrorist factions — Boko Haram’s Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunna lid-Da‘wa wa’l-Jihād (JAS) and the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) — has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 50 fighters in Borno State.

The violent confrontation occurred in Toumbun Gini, an island community located in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno, according to security sources. The deadly clash erupted as the two extremist groups engaged in a prolonged gunfight over control of territory and resources within the Lake Chad region.

Witnesses and intelligence sources revealed that heavy weapons were used during the confrontation, which left dozens of insurgents from both sides dead. Several others were wounded, while surviving fighters reportedly fled the area after hours of intense combat.

The Nigerian military has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident, but operations in the Lake Chad axis have intensified in recent months as troops continue efforts to reclaim areas under terrorist influence.
