Former Spain and Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets has confirmed that he will retire from professional football at the conclusion of the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The Inter Miami midfielder brings an end to one of the most illustrious careers in modern football history.

Busquets, who joined Inter Miami in 2023 to reunite with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez, leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Over 18 years at Barcelona, he lifted 32 major trophies, including nine La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns.

On the international stage, Busquets became a cornerstone of Spain’s golden era, earning 143 caps and playing a vital role in the nation’s 2010 FIFA World Cup victory and Euro 2012 triumph. He stepped away from international duty in 2022 as Spain’s third-most capped player in history.

Reflecting on his decision, Busquets said: “I feel like the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It’s been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story I always dreamed of. I’m retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all, grateful. Thank you all very much, see you soon.”

Across his career, Busquets made 722 appearances for Barcelona, the third-highest in the club’s history, cementing his reputation as one of the greatest holding midfielders of all time.

With Inter Miami securing their place in the MLS play-offs, fans and teammates will now look to give Busquets the perfect send-off as he prepares to bring his glittering career to a close in 2025.
