U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed disagreement with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the United Kingdom’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state. The two leaders addressed the issue during a joint press conference at Chequers on Thursday, as Trump continued his state visit to Britain.

“I have a disagreement with the prime minister on that score—one of our few disagreements,” Trump told reporters, referring to Starmer’s proposal.

In July, Starmer announced that Britain would move forward with formal recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September if Israel failed to meet certain conditions, including securing a ceasefire in Gaza.

While several Western allies, including France and Canada, are preparing to endorse Palestinian statehood at the UN, Washington has firmly opposed the move, warning it could complicate peace efforts in the region.

The debate highlights a rare diplomatic rift between the U.S. and the U.K., even as both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to broader cooperation on global security and bilateral ties.
