A solemn funeral ceremony was held in Doha on Thursday for five Hamas operatives and a Qatari security officer killed in an Israeli strike earlier this week. The procession, which took place at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque, was attended by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, alongside senior officials, relatives, and mourners.
The victims were killed on Tuesday in what Qatar described as a targeted Israeli attack on the capital. Hamas later confirmed the identities of its slain members: Humam al-Hayya, son of senior leader Khalil al-Hayya; Jihad Labad, his office director; and three bodyguards — Abdullah Abdul Wahid, Moamen Hassouna, and Ahmad Abdulmalik. A Qatari security officer, Corporal Badr Saad Al-Dosari, also lost his life in the strike.
In a statement, Qatar’s Interior Ministry expressed condolences to the victims’ families and vowed that measures were being taken “to safeguard lives and property.” The government strongly condemned the attack, labeling it a “cowardly act” and a violation of international law, warning that it would not tolerate what it called Israel’s “reckless behavior.”
The incident comes at a sensitive time, as Qatar — along with Egypt and the United States — continues to mediate efforts aimed at halting the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza. According to Palestinian health authorities, more than 64,700 people have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began in October 2023.
The funeral underscored the mounting tensions in the region and highlighted the risks facing mediators seeking to broker peace in the ongoing conflict.
