Tensions are rising in Ghana’s business community after a Nigerian trader openly challenged the Ghanaian Spare Parts Dealers Association, following demands that he shut down his shop.

The Nigerian businessman, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, said he would not bow to pressure to close his legally established business. He insisted that he had followed due process in registering his company and paying the required taxes, stressing that he has every right to operate in Ghana under regional trade agreements.

Members of the Spare Parts Dealers Association had reportedly asked him to close his shop, citing local business protection concerns. However, the move has sparked fresh debate about the treatment of foreign traders in Ghana, particularly Nigerians, who form a significant part of the country’s small and medium-scale trading community.

The confrontation underscores long-standing trade tensions between Ghanaian and Nigerian traders. Similar disputes have in the past led to shop closures, protests, and diplomatic interventions between both countries.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement, but the incident is already fueling conversations about fair competition, the enforcement of trade laws, and the need for stronger collaboration under ECOWAS protocols that allow free movement of goods and services across West African borders.
