Russian drone attacks on critical energy infrastructure in northern and southern Ukraine overnight plunged tens of thousands into darkness, intensifying the already fierce aerial battle between the two countries.

According to Ukrainian authorities, nearly 60,000 customers were left without electricity after waves of Russian drones struck multiple power facilities. Ukraine’s largest private energy provider, DTEK, confirmed that four facilities in the Odesa region were hit, leaving 29,000 people without power early Sunday.

The port city of Chornomorsk, just outside Odesa, suffered some of the heaviest damage, with homes and administrative buildings also struck. Local governor Oleh Kiper reported that emergency crews were working around the clock to restore electricity and repair damaged infrastructure.

The attacks come as the war, now stretching into its fourth year, sees both Russia and Ukraine stepping up their air campaigns. Moscow has increasingly targeted Ukraine’s energy and transport networks, while Kyiv has escalated strikes deep inside Russia, focusing on oil refineries and pipelines.

In response to the latest assault, President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed swift retaliation, promising Ukraine would continue to take the fight into Russian territory

“We will continue our active operations in exactly the way needed for Ukraine’s defence. The forces and resources are prepared. New deep strikes have also been planned,” Zelensky declared on X after meeting with Ukraine’s top general, Oleksandr Syrsky.

As Ukraine braces for more Russian strikes, the promise of deeper counterattacks signals that the conflict’s aerial dimension will only intensify in the coming weeks.
