Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has spoken out strongly against the Federal Government’s treatment of Nigerian football legends during the burial of former national team goalkeeper Peter Rufai.
Speaking at the funeral, West expressed disappointment that many Nigerian sporting icons are often celebrated during their active years but forgotten once they retire or face challenges. He lamented that the government fails to provide meaningful support to ex-internationals who once brought pride to the nation.
“The government remembers legends only when they no longer need them,” West said, stressing that Nigeria must do more to honour and care for its sports heroes while they are still alive.
Peter Rufai, fondly called “Dodo Mayana,” was one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, representing the Super Eagles at multiple African Cup of Nations tournaments and two FIFA World Cups. His passing has reignited conversations about the lack of welfare structures for retired athletes in the country.
Taribo West’s remarks have since resonated with fans and former players alike, sparking debate on the urgent need for reforms to ensure that Nigeria’s sports icons receive recognition, healthcare, and financial security after retirement.
