Motorists in Ikeja, Lagos, have raised alarm over a faulty traffic light that reportedly stays off for long periods before suddenly switching to red—creating confusion and leaving drivers vulnerable to alleged extortion by traffic officers.

According to eyewitness accounts, the malfunctioning signal has become a trap for unsuspecting road users. Many drivers, unaware that the light is inactive, proceed through the junction, only for it to abruptly turn red, giving officers on duty grounds to stop them.

Residents and commuters say the situation has turned into an easy excuse for officials to demand bribes, rather than addressing the faulty infrastructure itself. Some drivers describe the intersection as a “revenue point” rather than a regulated traffic spot.

The incident has reignited public frustration over traffic management in Lagos, with calls for the state government to urgently repair malfunctioning lights and curb alleged misconduct by enforcement officers.

For now, motorists in Ikeja continue to approach the faulty signal with caution, fearing that a simple drive through could turn into an expensive encounter.
