A heartbreaking tragedy has struck in Auchi, Edo State, after a young woman’s life was turned upside down just days after celebrating her academic success.
Otanor Ruth Bodom, a recent Higher National Diploma (HND) graduate in Marketing from Auchi Polytechnic, was left critically injured on Wednesday when she was hit by a Dangote Group truck near the school premises. The accident occurred only six days after she completed her final exams, marking what should have been the start of a promising new chapter in her life.

Witnesses say the truck driver — allegedly an underage individual without a valid driving licence — failed to stop after hitting Bodom. Instead, he reportedly attempted to flee the scene. The escape was cut short thanks to the swift actions of commercial motorcycle riders, who pursued the vehicle and forced it to a stop.

According to Bodom’s sister, Josephina Otabor, the impact of the collision was devastating. Doctors were forced to amputate one of her legs, and there are fears that her remaining leg may also require amputation due to the severity of her injuries.
The driver is currently in police custody in Auchi, with footage emerging of him being detained behind the truck involved in the incident. The Dangote Group has yet to release an official statement regarding the accident.
For Ruth Bodom and her family, what was meant to be a time of joy and celebration has turned into a fight for survival. Her story serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by unqualified and reckless drivers on Nigerian roads — and the life-altering consequences such negligence can bring.
