Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja for his arraignment on newly filed charges brought by the Nigeria Police Force.

The case, scheduled to be heard by Justice Emeka Nwite, involves allegations of cybercrime, forgery, and inciting police mutiny during a July protest with retired police officers.

According to the police, Sowore’s alleged offences stem from his involvement in the demonstration, which they claim violated multiple laws. The activist, however, arrived in court in high spirits, declaring his unwavering resolve in the face of what he described as intimidation by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

Speaking to journalists, Sowore maintained that both Nigerian citizens and members of the police force must be freed from “the shackles of oppressors who have held them hostage.” His court appearance comes just months after his January 2025 arraignment on 17 cybercrime-related charges over repeated references to Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP.”

The fresh legal battle marks another chapter in Sowore’s long-standing confrontation with Nigerian authorities, underscoring his continued role as one of the country’s most outspoken political dissidents.
