Panic broke out early Thursday morning after a train compartment detached while in motion along the Ladipo section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, causing confusion and temporary gridlock in the area. The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. and disrupted movement for over 30 minutes, alarming commuters and bystanders alike.

The train, which was traveling from Ogba Ayo in Ogun State to Apapa in Lagos, experienced a mechanical failure that led to the rear compartment suddenly disconnecting from the rest of the train. Eyewitnesses reported a loud jolt followed by chaos as the detachment startled passengers onboard and residents nearby.

“Everyone was shocked by what happened, but thankfully, no lives were lost,” said Oloruntoba Omodele, a bystander who witnessed the event unfold.

Ladipo, a bustling and heavily congested corridor known for its persistent traffic and proximity to busy marketplaces, quickly became the scene of halted transportation and concerned citizens.

Emergency responders were reportedly swift in arriving at the scene, helping to manage the growing traffic and securing the affected area to prevent further disruption.

Although no injuries or fatalities were reported, the incident has reignited concerns over the safety and maintenance of Nigeria’s aging rail infrastructure. The exact cause of the mechanical failure has not yet been officially confirmed, but calls are growing louder among transportation experts and analysts for a comprehensive investigation.

Public safety advocates are urging relevant agencies to prioritize maintenance and introduce stricter operational checks, especially in urban corridors like Lagos where rail lines run parallel to high-density roads and communities.

As one of the few remaining operational intercity routes, the Lagos-Abeokuta railway remains a vital mode of transport for thousands of Nigerians daily—and incidents like this highlight the pressing need for improved oversight.
