JNIM, a coalition of jihadist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda, has been increasingly active in Mali and the wider Sahel region, frequently targeting government installations, industrial sites, and civilian infrastructure in a campaign to destabilize the country.

The assault on the sugar factory marks another significant blow to local industry and raises fresh concerns about the security of economic assets in conflict-prone areas.
