Popular Syrian singer Omar Khairy was kidnapped and publicly humiliated by forces loyal to Abu Mohammad al-Jolani while performing at a wedding in the city of Al-Bab, northern Syria. The militant group, affiliated with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), claimed that Khairy has ties to the Assad regime—an allegation that remains unsubstantiated.

According to eyewitnesses, Khairy was mid-performance when members of Jolani’s forces stormed the venue, forcibly removed him from the stage, and detained him in front of the wedding guests. Videos circulating online show the singer being subjected to verbal abuse and public shaming, sparking condemnation from Syrians across political and ideological divides.

The incident has drawn criticism from human rights advocates, artists, and civil society organizations, who view it as yet another example of the increasing suppression of freedom of expression and cultural activity in rebel-held areas of Syria. Many are calling for Khairy’s immediate release and for the protection of artists from political retaliation.
