U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson has stated that the United States does not wish to be drawn further into the ongoing war in Ukraine, signaling a cautious approach as the conflict stretches into its third year.
Speaking amid growing debate in Washington over the scope of U.S. support for Kyiv, Johnson emphasized that while the United States remains committed to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty, it must avoid becoming entangled in a broader military confrontation.
“We continue to stand with the Ukrainian people, but we must be careful not to escalate this war beyond what is necessary,” Johnson said. “The American people do not want a deeper entanglement.”

His comments come as lawmakers in Congress weigh additional aid packages for Ukraine, with divisions emerging over the scale and nature of future assistance.

Johnson’s remarks reflect that cautious sentiment, as well as the broader desire among policymakers to balance international commitments with domestic priorities. The Biden administration has maintained that the U.S. will continue providing defensive aid to Ukraine, but has also stressed the importance of preventing a direct conflict with Russia.
