A devastating tragedy unfolded in Vietnam as at least 37 people lost their lives and eight remain missing after a tourist boat capsized during a sudden storm in Ha Long Bay, one of the country’s most iconic travel destinations.

According to local media, the vessel — named The Wonder Sea — was carrying 48 passengers and five crew members, all Vietnamese nationals, when it was caught in a violent thunderstorm. Strong winds, which hit without much warning, overturned the boat mid-excursion, plunging those on board into the water.

The group had been enjoying a sightseeing tour of the UNESCO-listed bay, famous for its emerald waters and towering limestone islands, when the weather suddenly turned treacherous. Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed, and so far, 11 people have been rescued. Authorities have recovered 27 bodies from the site of the wreck, including eight children.

Rescue operations continue amid increasingly difficult conditions, as meteorologists warn of a new tropical storm — named Wipha — making its way toward northern Vietnam.

This storm, the third typhoon to strike the South China Sea this year, is forecast to make landfall early next week. The country’s National Meteorological Centre has already raised alarms over the potential impact on coastal areas, including Ha Long Bay, complicating efforts to locate those still missing.

This heartbreaking incident has cast a somber shadow over one of Vietnam’s most beloved natural attractions. It also highlights the growing risks posed by extreme and unpredictable weather patterns in the region, as authorities scramble to improve safety protocols for both tourists and local communities.

As the nation mourns, thoughts and prayers pour in for the victims and their families, while rescue teams race against time — and the looming storm — to bring closure to this sorrowful chapter.
