Ukraine has entered a new political chapter as its parliament appointed Yulia Svyrydenko as the country’s first new prime minister in five years, marking a significant shift in leadership amid ongoing war with Russia.

The 39-year-old technocrat and former first deputy prime minister takes the helm during a critical period for Ukraine’s future—both on the battlefield and in its economic recovery.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, addressing lawmakers on Thursday, underscored the urgency of the transition, calling for renewed momentum in domestic weapons production and economic reform. He outlined ambitious goals for his new government, aiming to raise the share of Ukrainian-made weapons on the front lines from 40% to 50% within six months.

In her first public remarks as prime minister, Svyrydenko emphasized the need for decisive action. “War leaves no room for delay,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Our priorities for the first six months are clear: reliable supply for the army, expansion of domestic weapons production, and boosting the technological strength of our defense forces.”

Beyond defense, economic stabilization is high on Svyrydenko’s agenda. With Ukraine’s economy heavily reliant on foreign loans, the new government aims to cut red tape and deepen cooperation with international allies. Her appointment is also seen as a strategic move to reinforce ties with Washington.

She previously played a key role in securing a deal that gave the United States preferential access to Ukraine’s vast mineral resources—an agreement hailed as a cornerstone of U.S.-Ukraine relations under the Trump administration.

This is the most substantial government reshuffle since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. As prospects for peace remain distant, Kyiv is betting on experienced leadership and a revamped cabinet to strengthen its resilience and maintain Western support. Svyrydenko’s ability to deliver swift and effective reforms will be closely watched at home and abroad in the months ahead.
