Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh has officially entered the race for mayor of Minneapolis, positioning himself as a progressive candidate with deep ties to the city’s Somali-American community.
A self-described democratic socialist, Fateh’s campaign is already making waves following remarks about his goal to “infiltrate” government institutions to uplift and empower Somalis in Minneapolis.
Fateh, who has represented Minnesota’s 62nd District since 2021, has long been a vocal advocate for marginalized communities. His bid for mayor underscores a broader political vision—one focused on equity, inclusion, and building power for underrepresented groups.

His recent comments about leveraging public office to “enrich the Somali community” have sparked both praise and criticism, with supporters applauding his unapologetic advocacy and detractors questioning the phrasing and its broader implications.

In clarifying his intent, Fateh emphasized that his use of the word “infiltrate” refers to breaking down barriers within the political system that have historically excluded communities like his. For many of his backers, particularly within the East African diaspora, his candidacy is seen as a chance to reshape Minneapolis politics from the inside out.
