Tensions between the United States and two of Asia’s largest economies—India and China—are escalating following a fiery warning from a U.S. senator who threatened “bone-crushing sanctions” in response to their ongoing importation of Russian oil.

The senator’s comments come amid growing frustration in Washington over what is perceived as a lack of global alignment on isolating Russia economically, especially as the war in Ukraine continues with no end in sight.

According to the senator, India and China’s continued energy trade with Moscow not only undermines the effectiveness of Western sanctions but also directly supports the Russian war machine.

“Buying Russian oil at this stage is not just a financial transaction—it’s enabling aggression,” the senator stated in a strongly worded address. “If India and China won’t align with global efforts to pressure Putin’s regime, we must consider imposing bone-crushing sanctions to change the calculus.”

For India, Russian crude oil remains a key part of its energy strategy, offering discounted rates amid global price volatility. China, too, has maintained close economic ties with Russia, despite Western calls for greater distance. Both countries have thus far resisted Western pressure to scale back trade relations with Moscow.
