Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has made global headlines with a powerful condemnation of the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, calling it “the worst genocide of the 21st century” and sharply criticizing Europe’s failure to respond.
Speaking with unflinching clarity, Sánchez expressed deep frustration over what he described as a shameful lack of political will across European institutions. “What is happening in Gaza is not just a tragedy—it is a genocide unfolding before our eyes,” he said. “And Europe is complicit through its silence.”

The Spanish leader’s remarks come at a time when the civilian death toll in Gaza has reached staggering levels, with widespread destruction of homes, hospitals, and vital infrastructure.

Despite mounting international concern, many European governments have either stayed silent or maintained a cautious diplomatic line. Sánchez’s comments break from that pattern, positioning Spain as one of the few voices in Europe calling for stronger accountability and humanitarian intervention.
Sánchez has previously advocated for a ceasefire and supported the recognition of a Palestinian state, but his latest statement marks a significant escalation in tone, signaling a moral and political reckoning that he believes Europe can no longer avoid.
