Sirens echoed across Tokyo as authorities issued urgent flood warnings following an unprecedented deluge that brought the capital to a standstill.

The heavy rainfall, described as one of the most intense weather events to hit the city in years, triggered widespread alerts, warning residents to prepare for potential flash flooding and landslides.

Emergency systems were activated in multiple wards, and residents near rivers and low-lying areas were urged to evacuate or seek higher ground. Local authorities have deployed rescue crews and issued real-time updates through loudspeakers, mobile alerts, and public broadcasting networks.

Meteorologists report that the rainfall, caused by a stalled weather front over central Japan, shattered July records in several parts of the Tokyo metropolitan area. In some districts, more than 200 millimeters of rain fell within just a few hours — overwhelming storm drains, backing up traffic, and prompting the temporary suspension of rail services.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike addressed the public in an emergency briefing, urging calm while emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. “Please stay alert and follow evacuation instructions if you are in a flood-prone area. Your safety is our top priority,” she said.
