A brief but highly symbolic moment drew attention during Israeli Minister Moshe Arbel’s recent public appearance, when French Imam Hassen Chalghoumi attempted to kiss the minister’s hand during a visit to Israel — a gesture that was quickly and politely declined.
The incident occurred during an interfaith meeting that brought together Jewish, Muslim, and Christian leaders to promote dialogue and mutual understanding.

As the two men greeted one another, Imam Chalghoumi leaned forward in a traditional gesture of deep respect, attempting to kiss Minister Arbel’s hand. However, Arbel swiftly and courteously pulled his hand away, opting instead for a more standard handshake.

The moment was caught on camera and widely circulated on social media, drawing a flurry of commentary and mixed reactions.

Some viewed the gesture as an expression of humility and reverence from Chalghoumi — a vocal advocate for interfaith peace and one of the most prominent moderate Muslim figures in Europe.
