UEFA has handed down significant financial penalties to five major European football clubs—Chelsea, Barcelona, Lyon, Aston Villa, and AS Roma—for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

The governing body confirmed the sanctions after reviewing financial records submitted by the clubs as part of its monitoring process. Chelsea received the heaviest fine, amounting to €20 million, followed by Barcelona with a €15 million penalty. French side Lyon was fined €12.5 million, Aston Villa €11 million, and AS Roma €3 million.

UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules are designed to ensure clubs operate within their financial means, promoting long-term stability and fair competition across European competitions.

The latest sanctions reflect UEFA’s ongoing commitment to enforcing financial discipline, particularly as clubs navigate the challenges of post-pandemic recovery and increasing transfer market spending.

The announcement comes as European football faces growing scrutiny over spending practices, with UEFA vowing to strengthen its financial oversight and introduce updated sustainability regulations in the coming seasons.
