Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its football greats, as former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has passed away at the age of 61. The news of his death, which occurred on Thursday following an illness, has sent waves of sorrow throughout the football community, both at home and abroad.
Widely known by his nickname “Dodo Mayana,” Rufai was a towering figure in Nigerian football history. He was part of the iconic Super Eagles squad that lifted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy and also featured in Nigeria’s debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup that same year.

The Super Eagles paid tribute to the late legend on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle:
“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Rufai earned 65 caps for the national team during a career that spanned over a decade. He etched his name into the record books in 1993 when he scored for the Super Eagles in a resounding 6–0 victory over Ethiopia—a rare feat for a goalkeeper. His presence between the posts was marked by exceptional reflexes, composure, and athleticism that inspired a generation of Nigerian players and fans alike.

Beyond his national team heroics, Rufai enjoyed a rich club career that saw him play across several countries.
He featured for Dragons de l’Ouémé in Benin Republic, Lokeren and Beveren in Belgium, Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands, and later in Portugal with Farense and Gil Vicente. His performances earned him respect and admiration across European and African leagues.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Rufai also pursued education passionately. After retiring from professional football, he attended the National Institute for Sports in Lagos, where he received formal coaching education—highlighting his enduring commitment to the development of Nigerian sports.
Peter Rufai’s legacy extends far beyond the football pitch. He remains a symbol of excellence, discipline, and national pride. As Nigeria reflects on his contributions, he will be remembered not only as a champion but as a true legend who left an indelible mark on the beautiful game.
May Dodo Mayana rest in peace, forever a hero in Nigerian football history.
