U.S President Donald Trump on Friday launched a sharp attack against New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, labeling him a “communist” and warning that the city risks becoming “a communistic city” if Mamdani wins the November election.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump expressed disbelief over Mamdani’s unexpected surge in the race. “I can’t believe that’s happening,” he said. “That’s a terrible thing for our country, by the way.”
Trump’s comments come just days after Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, delivered a major political upset by defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the first round of the Democratic mayoral primary. Mamdani’s win has energized progressives while drawing fierce criticism from conservatives.

Despite Trump’s characterization, Mamdani is not a communist, but a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a political organization that advocates for progressive reforms such as housing justice, universal healthcare, and workers’ rights.
His platform has gained traction among young voters and working-class communities, particularly in the wake of growing dissatisfaction with the city’s political establishment.
