Widespread unrest has erupted across Kenya as Gen Z demonstrators took to the streets in protest, marking the anniversary of last year’s deadly anti-tax movement. At least 10 people were shot during Tuesday’s protests, with two confirmed dead, according to local reports and human rights observers.

The nationwide demonstrations, driven largely by Kenya’s youth, reignited deep public frustration over economic hardship, government accountability, and proposed financial reforms. Protesters flooded major cities—including Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa—chanting slogans and demanding systemic change.

This year’s protest falls exactly one year after the July 2024 tax demonstrations that saw 19 people killed and the storming of Kenya’s Parliament in one of the country’s most dramatic political uprisings in recent memory.

On Tuesday, scenes of chaos once again played out as riot police deployed tear gas and live rounds to disperse crowds. Social media platforms were filled with videos showing unarmed demonstrators confronting security forces, raising alarm among human rights advocates over the excessive use of force.
