An Israeli F-16 fighter jet has successfully intercepted and shot down an Iranian Shahed-136 drone over Syrian territory, Israeli military sources confirmed on Saturday.
The unmanned aerial vehicle, believed to be operated by Iranian-backed forces, was detected entering airspace that posed a threat to Israeli interests in the region. The Shahed-136, a loitering munition often used in asymmetric warfare, has been deployed in several conflict zones, including Ukraine and the Middle East.

According to military officials, the drone was neutralized before it could reach Israeli airspace or allied targets. The interception is part of Israel’s broader air defense strategy aimed at countering threats emanating from Iranian proxies operating in Syria and beyond.
This latest encounter underscores the growing tensions between Israel and Iran, as drone warfare becomes a more frequent and sophisticated tool in their ongoing shadow conflict. The Israeli Air Force has maintained a firm policy of preemptively engaging aerial threats linked to Iran’s regional activities.
