Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has drawn public attention after suggesting that toxic online culture—specifically “mean tweets” and internet harassment—may have played a role in shaping the behavior of Vance Boelten, the suspect in a recent high-profile murder case.
Boelten, who is currently facing charges in connection with a violent crime that has shocked communities across the state, is under intense public and media scrutiny.
Governor Walz remarked during a press briefing that the broader impact of social media hostility cannot be ignored when examining the psychological state and motivations of individuals involved in such acts.

“We have to take seriously the mental health effects of online harassment,” the governor said. “What we say on the internet matters. This isn’t about excusing actions—this is about understanding root causes and how we as a society can prevent future tragedies.”

As the investigation into Boelten’s alleged crimes continues, authorities have yet to confirm any direct connection between his online activity and the incident itself.
