Gennaro Gattuso has officially been named the new head coach of Italy’s national football team, taking over from Luciano Spalletti in a critical period for the Azzurri as they aim to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 47-year-old, a legendary figure in Italian football, brings both passion and pedigree to the role. A key member of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad, Gattuso earned 73 caps for his country and is widely regarded as one of the most determined midfielders of his generation.

His appointment was confirmed on Sunday by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), with an official presentation scheduled for Thursday.

“Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football,” FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said in a statement. “The blue shirt is like a second skin for him. His motivation, professionalism, and experience will be essential. He understands the weight of the mission before us, and I thank him for his total commitment in accepting this challenge.”

Gattuso inherits a team under pressure. Italy, four-time World Cup champions, failed to qualify for the last two tournaments in 2018 and 2022. Their 2026 campaign started on the wrong foot with a heavy 3–0 defeat to Norway, further fueling concerns among supporters and stakeholders alike.

Despite the rocky road ahead, Gattuso’s coaching résumé brings a mix of top-tier experience and a no-nonsense mentality. His most recent role was with Croatian side Hajduk Split, where he led the club to qualification for the upcoming UEFA Conference League.

Previously, he managed high-profile clubs including Napoli, AC Milan, Valencia, and Marseille. His familiarity with pressure and high expectations could serve Italy well as they aim to turn their fortunes around.
As the Azzurri prepare for their next Group I qualifying matches against Estonia and Israel in September, Gattuso will be tasked with not only stabilizing the squad but reigniting the national team’s competitive edge. With his fierce commitment and deep connection to Italian football, hopes are high that Gattuso can guide Italy back to the world stage.
