In a devastating night for residents of Lutsk, a city in Western Ukraine, at least five civilians were injured after a barrage of Russian missiles and drones struck an apartment building.
The attack comes in the wake of a stark warning from Russian President Vladimir Putin—reportedly relayed through U.S. President Donald Trump—that Moscow would retaliate after Ukrainian drone strikes destroyed several strategic bomber aircraft deep inside Russian territory.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene in Lutsk, where families were left shaken and homes severely damaged. Among the five confirmed injured in Lutsk, local authorities are still assessing the full scale of destruction and possible additional casualties.

Meanwhile, in the capital Kyiv, the situation escalated further. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that 20 people were injured, with 16 hospitalized, following a separate Russian strike. Tragically, four people were killed. The city’s metro system was disrupted after a missile damaged tracks between key stations, according to Kyiv’s military administration.

Ukraine’s national rail service, Ukrzaliznytsia, also reported infrastructure damage, leading to the rerouting of several train lines. “We are doing everything possible to keep transport running and ensure passenger safety,” the company said in a statement.

The surge in Russian attacks appears to be part of a broader escalation in the conflict, as drone warfare and long-range missile strikes intensify on both sides. The Kremlin’s latest strikes follow Ukraine’s bold use of unmanned aerial vehicles to target critical Russian military assets—a tactic that has provoked a sharp response from Moscow.

As the war drags on into another brutal season, the human cost continues to rise. Ordinary Ukrainians, from Lutsk to Kyiv and beyond, are once again paying the highest price—caught in the crossfire of geopolitical retaliation and relentless warfare.
