A bridge collapse in Russia’s Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, has caused a serious traffic accident involving a passenger train, regional officials confirmed Saturday. The incident occurred in the Vygonichsky district near a federal highway, according to Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz.

“Unfortunately, there are injuries,” Bogomaz stated on the Telegram messaging platform, without specifying the number or severity of those hurt.

Local reports from Russian Telegram channels Baza and SHOT—known for sharing information from security and law enforcement sources—claimed that the passenger train collided with the collapsed section of the bridge. Baza further suggested, without presenting evidence, that the collapse may have been the result of an explosion.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations has deployed additional rescue units to assist those already working at the crash site. Efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage and provide aid to the injured.

This incident adds to the growing tension in Russia’s western border regions, which have experienced regular attacks—including drone strikes, shelling, and sabotage—since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine over three years ago. The Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod regions have all faced repeated disruptions and military-related incidents during the conflict.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to release more details about the cause of the bridge collapse and the condition of the train passengers. Meanwhile, speculation about potential sabotage underscores the fragile security situation in Russia’s border zones.
