Andriy Portnov, a former high-ranking Ukrainian official who served as deputy head of President Viktor Yanukovych’s administration, was shot and killed in Madrid early this morning.

Spanish authorities confirmed the fatal shooting occurred in the capital city, triggering an international investigation into what may have been a politically motivated assassination.

Portnov, who was chiefly responsible for overseeing legal affairs during Yanukovych’s presidency, had been living abroad following the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution.

Portnov was a controversial figure in Ukraine’s political landscape, widely seen as one of the architects of the Yanukovych administration’s legal strategies. His close ties to the pro-Russian leadership and involvement in high-stakes legal maneuvers made him both a powerful and polarizing figure.

No suspects have been publicly identified yet, and Spanish police say they are actively investigating the motive and circumstances surrounding the killing.

His death comes amid heightened tensions in Europe tied to the ongoing war in Ukraine and deep divisions over legacy figures from the Yanukovych era.
