In a chilling act of violence that has shocked the online community and beyond, 23-year-old Mexican social media influencer Valeria Marquez was fatally shot during a TikTok livestream at her beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco.

Known for her beauty and lifestyle content, Marquez had built a substantial following, with some of her videos reaching hundreds of thousands of views.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening while Marquez was at her salon in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara. According to a statement released by the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office, an unidentified man entered the premises and opened fire. Authorities confirmed that Marquez died at the scene.

While the motive for the attack remains unclear, Zapopan and the broader Jalisco region are known strongholds of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal organizations.

However, State Security Coordinator Roberto Alarcón stated that there is currently no evidence linking the attack to any organized crime group. Zapopan mayor Juan José Frangie also confirmed that Marquez had not previously reported receiving threats or requested protection from authorities.

“It’s unimaginable. You’re creating content, doing your job, and suddenly your life is taken. A femicide is one of the most horrific crimes,” said Mayor Frangie in a statement following the incident.

Media reports suggest that the attacker may have posed as a customer or someone delivering a gift to gain access to the salon before opening fire. The brutal nature of the crime has once again drawn attention to the growing dangers faced by women in Mexico, particularly in the public eye.

According to the United Nations, approximately 10 women and girls are murdered each day in Mexico, highlighting the country’s persistent struggle with gender-based violence.

Valeria Marquez’s death has sparked a wave of grief and outrage among her fans and followers. As investigations continue, the public and her online community await justice for a young woman who lost her life in a space she created to empower and inspire.

Her story is a tragic reminder of the real-world vulnerabilities that digital fame cannot shield against, and it underscores the urgent need for action against gender violence in Mexico.
