American R&B star Chris Brown has been arrested in the United Kingdom in connection with an alleged assault that took place at a London nightclub in 2023.

The 36-year-old singer, known for his chart-topping hits and tumultuous past, was taken into custody early Thursday morning at the five-star Lowry Hotel in Manchester, according to reports from The Sun and The Daily Telegraph.

The arrest stems from an incident at the upscale Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district in February 2023, where Brown is accused of assaulting music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle.

London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 36-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm but did not publicly name Brown.

“A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 2:00 am on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm,” a police spokesperson told AFP. “He has been taken into custody where he remains.”

Brown reportedly arrived in the UK on Wednesday afternoon via private jet, ahead of a series of scheduled performances across Britain next month.

The Grammy-winning artist, who rose to fame in the early 2000s with a string of R&B and pop hits, has long been a controversial figure. His career was marred by a 2009 conviction for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna on the eve of the Grammy Awards, a highly publicized case that significantly impacted his public image.

Despite legal troubles and widespread criticism, Brown has continued to release music and perform globally, maintaining a dedicated fan base. However, the latest arrest casts a new shadow over his upcoming tour and raises questions about potential legal consequences in the UK.

As of now, Brown remains in custody, and UK authorities have not yet released details about a court date or formal charges. The incident marks yet another chapter in the singer’s long history of run-ins with the law, reigniting public debate about accountability and celebrity privilege.
