History was written at the Vatican on Thursday as Robert Francis Prevost became the first American ever elected pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks a defining moment for the Roman Catholic Church, as the 267th successor to St. Peter steps forward to lead 1.4 billion Catholics across the globe.

Tens of thousands of people filled St. Peter’s Square, erupting in applause and waving flags as the white smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel—signaling that the College of Cardinals had reached a decision on their second day of conclave.

Moments later, the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica rang out in joyous harmony with church bells across Rome, announcing to the world: Habemus Papam—”We have a Pope.”

When the newly elected pontiff finally appeared on the iconic balcony of the basilica, he was greeted by a sea of cameras, pilgrims, and faithful cheering in anticipation.

Dressed in the traditional white papal vestments and framed by red curtains, Pope Leo XIV smiled warmly, bowed his head, and offered his first words to the world: “Peace be with you.”

The 69-year-old cardinal from the United States brings with him years of pastoral experience, theological expertise, and a reputation for humility and bridge-building within the Church.

He now follows in the footsteps of Pope Francis, the Argentine reformer who passed away last month after a 12-year papacy that brought sweeping reforms and a renewed focus on social justice, inclusion, and global outreach.

Prevost’s election is a milestone not only for the Vatican but also for the global Church. As the first pontiff born and raised in the United States, his leadership represents both a geographic and symbolic shift—bringing a fresh perspective to the papacy in a time of great spiritual and institutional challenges.

Pope Leo XIV now inherits a Church facing complex issues: from navigating fallout from long-standing abuse scandals and tightening finances, to addressing the modern world’s spiritual hunger, political unrest, and technological transformation.

His papacy begins at a pivotal time, as the Church looks to reclaim moral clarity and spiritual relevance in a rapidly changing world.

As he prepares to deliver his first Urbi et Orbi (“To the City and the World”) blessing, Catholics around the globe will be watching closely—praying for wisdom, compassion, and unity under this historic new leadership.
