India Gate Evacuated as Delhi Heightens Security Amid Rising Tensions with Pakistan

As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan, heightened security measures have been implemented across Delhi, with India Gate evacuated late Thursday evening as a precautionary step. Officials cleared the iconic monument’s premises, not allowing anyone to remain in the area, citing preventive protocols amid the uncertain geopolitical climate.

While panic briefly gripped the area, Delhi Police clarified the move. A senior DCP remarked, “This is standard practice to keep C Hexagon traffic jam-free. Nothing new in it. Anyone can come tomorrow and see it.”

However, the timing of the evacuation coinciding with rising cross-border hostilities has raised concerns among residents.

In a significant move, the Delhi government suspended all leaves for its employees until further notice. An official order from the Services Department stated that no government staff member would be granted leave, emphasizing the need for maximum preparedness.

“Given the prevailing situation and in anticipation of any emergency, all official leaves are hereby cancelled,” the circular noted.

District magistrates across Delhi have also been instructed to conduct review meetings with their teams, focusing on health and disaster preparedness. This includes ensuring readiness of emergency services and coordination between civil defense and healthcare systems, should a crisis arise.

Meanwhile, air travel disruptions continue to add to the uncertainty. On Thursday, around 90 flights to and from Delhi were cancelled by various domestic and international airlines. This marks the second consecutive day of cancellations, affecting passengers nationwide.

The cancellations come in the wake of 27 airports across India being temporarily shut, a move linked to military operations and ongoing national security drills following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.

The National Capital Region (NCR) is currently on high alert, with increased surveillance and rapid response systems being activated. Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm but vigilant, and to follow official advisories as the situation develops.
