Chelsea’s attacking sensation, Cole Palmer, picked up an untimely injury during a training session on the eve of the Blues’ crucial Premier League showdown against Arsenal.

The 22-year-old was subsequently left out of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the match, which ended in a disappointing 1-0 defeat for Chelsea at the Emirates. Mikel Merino’s 20th-minute strike proved to be the difference as the Blues struggled without their star playmaker.

Palmer’s injury has now raised concerns about his availability for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia. Newly appointed England boss Thomas Tuchel may have to rethink his plans, with Palmer’s participation now hanging in the balance.

Speaking about the situation, Maresca revealed that he does not expect Palmer to join the England squad. “I don’t think so, to be honest,” Maresca said when asked about Palmer’s potential call-up. “His injury happened in yesterday’s session. It’s a muscle problem, so I don’t think he’ll be able to go.”

The Chelsea manager also confirmed that Palmer will undergo a scan on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. While acknowledging the setback, Maresca suggested that the enforced rest could have a silver lining for the young midfielder.

“We never wish for injuries, but in Cole’s case, this could be a good opportunity for him to get some physical and mental rest,” he added.

Chelsea remain hopeful that Palmer will recover in time for their first fixture after the international break against Tottenham Hotspur. However, the final decision on his return will depend on the outcome of his medical assessment and recovery progress.
