Tension flared in Zamfara State on Wednesday after angry youths in Dansadau town, Maru Local Government Area, attacked a state lawmaker over allegations of poor representation and neglect of his constituents.
The lawmaker, Kabiru Mikailu, who represents Maru South Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, was reportedly assaulted by residents when he accompanied Governor Dauda Lawal on what was described as a historic visit to the troubled community.
Eyewitness accounts said the visit quickly turned chaotic as residents confronted the legislator, accusing him of abandoning the area since his election. The aggrieved youths claimed Mikailu failed to visit the community regularly or engage with constituents on issues affecting their lives.
Some residents alleged that the lawmaker did not attend key community events, including Sallah celebrations, and also failed to visit families impacted by repeated bandit attacks that have plagued the area. The accusations reportedly fueled anger among the youths, who expressed frustration over what they described as long-standing neglect.
Security operatives accompanying the governor were said to have intervened promptly to disperse the crowd and restore order, preventing the situation from escalating further. The lawmaker was escorted away from the scene to ensure his safety.
