Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa has ignited widespread conversation online after sharing her thoughts on the biblical writings of Apostle Paul, saying she feels his letters reflect attitudes that appear unfriendly toward women.
Makinwa made the remark during a discussion in which she referenced instructions attributed to Paul in the Bible, including passages that advise women to remain silent in church. She argued that such directives should be understood within the cultural and patriarchal context of the time in which they were written, rather than being interpreted as timeless or divinely mandated rules.
According to her, Paul’s letters were shaped by the societal norms of his era, which often limited the roles and authority of women. She contrasted these views with the way women were treated in the teachings and interactions of Jesus, noting that the Bible frequently portrays Jesus as showing acceptance, compassion, and respect toward women.
Her comments have since generated intense discussion across social media and religious circles, with many debating how Paul’s writings should be interpreted in modern times. Some supporters agree that certain biblical texts reflect historical cultural norms, while others argue that Paul’s teachings have been misunderstood or taken out of context.
Critics of Paul’s letters often cite verses that appear to restrict women’s leadership or participation within the church, fueling long-standing theological debates about gender roles in Christianity.
