Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has made a candid revelation about his future at the club, disclosing that the Old Trafford hierarchy wanted him to leave during the summer transfer window but lacked the resolve to follow through with the decision.
Speaking in an interview with Portuguese broadcaster Canal11, Fernandes admitted the situation has stayed with him mentally, saying the possibility of his departure was clearly communicated to him. According to the midfielder, he raised the issue with club directors but felt they did not have the courage to make a firm call.
Fernandes explained that despite the uncertainty, he chose to remain at Manchester United for both personal and professional reasons. Family considerations played a role, but he also stressed his genuine affection for the club. He added that discussions with the manager were crucial in convincing him to stay, even as he sensed a lack of urgency from the club’s leadership to keep him.
The Portugal international said he was deeply hurt by the feeling that his departure would not have troubled the club. He described the situation as more saddening than painful, especially given his commitment and availability since joining United. Fernandes emphasized that he consistently gives his best on the pitch, regardless of form, and has always made himself available to play.
He also expressed frustration when comparing his dedication to that of others at the club, noting that some players appear less committed to defending the club’s values and identity. Seeing that, he said, has been particularly difficult to accept.
Fernandes’ comments have sparked widespread discussion among fans and pundits, as they raise fresh questions about Manchester United’s internal decision-making and how key players are valued. As one of the team’s most influential figures, his remarks add another layer to the ongoing debate about leadership, commitment, and direction at the club.
