The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy will officially resume on January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns linked to the misuse of vehicles with unauthorized tinted windows.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who explained that the decision followed a comprehensive review of recent crime trends and the need to strengthen public safety across the country. According to the police, vehicles fitted with illegal tinted glass have increasingly been used to facilitate criminal activities.

Hundeyin clarified that there is no court order preventing the police from enforcing the tinted glass law. He noted that enforcement was voluntarily suspended in October after a legal matter, allowing motorists ample time to regularize their documentation and obtain the required permits.

However, the police said recent developments have made it necessary to reactivate enforcement. The statement pointed to a worrying increase in crimes committed using vehicles with unauthorized tinted glass, which criminals reportedly use to hide their identities and evade detection. Such crimes include armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent offenses.

The NPF stressed that the renewed enforcement is aimed at curbing these security threats and ensuring safer roads for all Nigerians. Motorists who require tinted glass for medical or security reasons were advised to apply for permits through officially approved channels before the enforcement date.

As the January 2026 deadline approaches, the police have urged drivers to comply with the law to avoid penalties, emphasizing that the policy is part of broader efforts to reduce crime and enhance national security.
