Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that Nigeria’s next presidential election should produce a candidate from the southern region of the country, stressing the importance of fairness and power rotation.

Speaking on the nation’s political landscape, Wike emphasized that the principle of zoning remains critical to Nigeria’s unity and stability. According to him, allowing the presidency to remain in the South is necessary to maintain balance and mutual trust among the country’s diverse regions.

Wike argued that Nigeria’s democracy thrives when all parts of the country feel included in governance, adding that disregarding power rotation could deepen political divisions. He noted that the South only recently regained the presidency and should be allowed to complete its turn before power shifts elsewhere.

His comments have already sparked debate across political circles, with supporters viewing the statement as a call for equity, while critics argue that leadership should be based solely on competence rather than geography.

The remarks come amid growing political maneuvering ahead of the next general election, as political heavyweights begin positioning themselves and shaping narratives around zoning, regional balance, and national cohesion.
