At least 12 people, including one of the attackers, have been killed following a deadly mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. The attack, which authorities have described as a terrorist incident, has left the nation in shock and mourning.

The shooting occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. local time on Sunday during Chanukah by the Sea, a public event marking the beginning of Hanukkah, the annual Jewish festival. Hundreds of people had gathered at the popular beachfront location when gunfire erupted, prompting panic and a swift emergency response.

New South Wales police confirmed that emergency services were dispatched after reports of shots fired. One gunman was killed at the scene, while a second suspect was taken into custody in critical condition. Two police officers sustained injuries during the response and are receiving medical treatment.

In addition to the fatalities, at least 29 people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds and other injuries. Authorities said several of the injured remain in serious condition as hospitals continue to provide emergency care.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “targeted attack against Jewish Australians” and labeling it a terrorist act. He expressed solidarity with the Jewish community and vowed that those responsible would be fully held to account.

The incident has triggered heightened security measures across Sydney and other major cities, particularly around religious and cultural sites. Investigations are ongoing as law enforcement works to determine the motive behind the attack and whether others were involved.

The tragic shooting has sparked renewed discussions across Australia about public safety, extremism, and the protection of religious communities, as the country grapples with one of its deadliest acts of violence in recent years.
