Tensions in Benin have escalated sharply as additional factions of the country’s military have reportedly joined the ongoing coup attempt against President Patrice Talon.

The development comes just hours after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced its decision to launch a military intervention aimed at “instilling order” and restoring constitutional governance in the country.

According to verified sources, the growing coalition of mutinous soldiers has intensified pressure on the Talon administration, raising fears of prolonged instability within the nation. The move by new military elements to align themselves with the coup plotters signals a rapidly shifting power dynamic and suggests deeper fractures within Benin’s armed forces.

ECOWAS leaders, in an emergency session, expressed concern over the deteriorating political situation and authorized a military response should diplomatic channels fail.

The regional bloc maintains that its priority is to prevent further breakdown of security and to safeguard democratic institutions. However, the decision to intervene has also stirred debate, given the region’s recent history of coups and anti-intervention sentiment.
