Security forces from Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region have launched a major counterterrorism operation targeting ISIS-linked militants in the Bari region. The coordinated dawn raids were carried out in the areas of Bacaad and Habar Bakuuje, where multiple members of the ISIS-Somalia faction were reportedly killed.
According to local security sources, the operations were part of a wider offensive aimed at dismantling ISIS hideouts and disrupting their operational networks in the mountainous terrain of northeastern Somalia. Puntland forces reportedly engaged the militants in heavy gunfire during the early morning assault, resulting in the elimination of several insurgents.
Authorities confirmed that the operation was intelligence-led and conducted to suppress terrorist activities that have posed a growing threat to stability in the region. “Our troops successfully neutralized several ISIS terrorists and seized weapons and materials used in recent attacks,” a Puntland security official stated.
ISIS-Somalia has maintained a presence in the Bari Mountains, where they have been involved in ambushes, extortion, and clashes with both government and rival al-Shabaab fighters. Puntland’s latest offensive underscores its continued efforts to strengthen regional security and eliminate terrorist safe havens.
